Oil pipeline belonging to Kenya Pipeline Company(KPC) burst on Thursday night in Kisumu near Kanyamedha and Obunga causing oil spillage in the area.
The cause of the breakage that brought fear among residents is still unknown , however engineers from KPC have since turned off the line.
Kisumu Central sub-county Deputy County Commissioner Hussein Alason Hussein said has said they sealed off the Kondele-Kisumu airport bypass after the incident to prevent the public from accessing the scene.
Hussein added that an excavator was brought to the scene to help prevent oil from getting into nearby River Kisat and eventually endangering acquatic life and humans.
The amount of oil lost in the spillage was not yet ascertained and they will give report later on the day.
Kisumu residents were warned from siphoning the oil while officers were deployed to check the roads and divert traffic.
