Aga khan University Hospital in Nairobi performed the first ever penile implant procedure to treat erectile dysfunction in East and Central Africa.
The surgery was performed on a male in his 40’s who had been suffering from erectile dysfunction for many years after trying other treatments without success.
The procedure which takes approximately an hour to perform, involves implanting a prosthetic device in the penis to allow Erectile Dysfunction(ED) to get an erection.
According to Dr Ahmed Yousef, the lead surgeon in the procedure, multiple tests were conducted on the patient including a penile doppler ultra sound which turned out that he was in that condition as a result of severe venous leakage in his manhood.
“Through this procedure, his erectile dysfunction condition has been treated. If he had issues with premature ejaculation, it is also treated through this procedure,” added Dr Yousef.
This is the first time for this procedure to be conducted in this region as it requires a specialist expertise, a sub-speciality in urology.
According to the hospital, approximately 15-20 per cent of men on the country suffer from erectile disfunction and premature ejaculation, this men often suffer in silence.
“This patients can acces specialised care from urologist at the Aghakan University Hospital in Nairobi, ” the hospital said in a statement.
The procedure costs sh.800,000 to sh.1million and it’s success is at 95-97 percent.
