Kenya Railways purchases seven new trains for the Nairobi-Kisumu route

Kenya Railways has bought seven passenger trains from China to be used between Nairobi and Kisumu to boost the railway transport system in the route.

The rehabilitated metre gauge operates once a week and the company now seeks to increase frequencies in the route.

According to the Kenya Railways Regional manager for Kisumu Michael Disi, the new locomotives will arrive in Kenya at the end of next month and start operation at the beginning of April.

“The seven passenger locomotives that we have procured from China are almost complete and we shall receive them by the end of March and we intend to start using them in April,” said Disi.

The trains will boost the frequencies in the route to three to match the increasing demand for the services in the area.

“The purchase of the locomotives has been necessitated by the demonstrated increase of passengers from the two regions who are willing to use the railway line,” said Disi.

The railway line started operations in December last year and has so far ferried 2,000 passengers.

The parastatal is now constructing the Kisumu-Butere route to extend the services to Butere for the passengers travelling to regions like Mumias.

A move which Government spokesperson Col Cyrus Oguna says will benefit and expand sectors of the economy such as tourism in the western region.

“The transformation of the Nairobi-Kisumu train is a game changer as far as the development of the region is concerned and will play a significant role in boosting tourism on the western circuit,” said Col Oguna.
